Infatuation is the state of being carried away by an unreasonable desire or want, which is a perceived deficiency, a need, absence of. The physical and mental inadequacy of the infatuated person can be fulfilled by the object or person.
  Usually, one is inspired with an intense but short-lived passion or admiration for someone, an object or adopted child.
 

Characteristics

Because in common parlance, 'infatuation is extravagant or foolish love behavior, an infatuated person, quite commonly, is someone who is over-valuing the beloved, object or person, has mistaken beliefs, suppression of personal judgments and personality dislikes, temporary suspension of personal beliefs concerning the object, child or person. 
Some consider that infatuation can only be distinguished from, in retrospect...others suggest that infatuation may be the first step towards mental growth...can grow into a more mature love in the first stage of a relationship before "the bumpy", but nonetheless inevitable, transition from romantic infatuation to mature intimacy' and initial infatuation of adopted children exceeding in unrealistic expectations of the child often produces disappointing results in the eyes of the adoptive parent, causing disappointment through rejection phase.
In such a view, 'adoptive parents begin as prolifically inventive, producing enthralling illusions about the child...only to be disappointed into truth'.
